Ordovician crinoids – examine geological era and origin
Published by M-Mineralien
Ordovician crinoids are fossil sea lilies from the Ordovician period. However, the provenance information "Erfoud" is insufficient to determine the age of a fossil from a Moroccan slab. Here you will learn how to reliably verify the geological period, stratigraphic layer, and state of preservation.
What "Ordovician" actually means
"Ordovician" refers to a geological time period, not a quality grade or a trade name. Crinoids belong to the echinoderms; they are animals that, despite their resemblance to flowers, are not plants. The geological period is determined based on the stratigraphic layer and scientific classification. The shape of the arms or the color of the rock alone is insufficient for this purpose.
Ordovician crinoids are scientifically documented from Morocco. For example, Iocrinus africanus was described from the Middle Ordovician. This species originates from a specific geological context; therefore, no general age assignment can be made for all commercially available Moroccan crinoid plates. Details can be found in the scientific description of Iocrinus africanus .
Erfoud is an indication of origin, not proof of age.
The well-known Scyphocrinites plates from the Erfoud region are assigned to the Late Silurian to Early Devonian in the scientific literature. Therefore, they should not be classified as Ordovician solely on the basis of their Moroccan origin. A publication on Scyphocrinitides from Morocco explains the geological context.
For a collection, this distinction is essential: A correctly identified younger fossil is more informative than an impressive slab with an inaccurate age label. If the stratigraphic layer or species is not reliably known, the description should clearly state this limitation. Upon request, we will discuss the information available for the specific specimen.
What information you should ask for before making a purchase
Ask about the find location, region, and, if applicable, the specific geological formation or strata, as well as the basis for the species identification. Have it explained whether the age is derived from the documented stratigraphic sequence or merely estimated. A general country designation does not replace this information. Keep the provenance information together with the specimen and the purchase documents.
Equally important are slab dimensions, weight, current photographs, and a description of the specimen's preservation and preparation. Additional views of the back, margins, and transitions between the stem and crown facilitate comparison. The buyer's guide for crinoids explains the selection process; an overview of the fossil-bearing regions is provided by Fossils from Morocco .
Assess preservation and preparation objectively
Examine which parts of the crinoids are preserved and how clearly the fine structures have been exposed. A slab with several fossils can be very decorative; however, the number of crowns alone does not determine its quality. Also pay attention to cracks, glued areas, additions, and the stability of the rock. Restorations should be explained rather than hidden behind a general quality rating.
The assembly of individual fossils into a slab is distinct from their natural, shared preservation. A professional repair is also different from an undisclosed addition. Ask specifically about these points. The guide " Recognizing Forgeries and Alterations" helps you critically evaluate descriptions and photographs.
Choose a price and presentation that suits the piece.
The price is determined by factors including completeness, quality of preparation, size, aesthetics, provenance documentation, and condition. Age alone does not justify a high price. Instead of a general price quote, we provide offers for specific pieces that are currently available. Please tell us your desired size, the intended location, and your budget.
Large slabs require secure placement or suitable fastening. Consider the weight and discuss packaging and shipping before purchasing. Labeling with the fossil's name, location of discovery, and verifiable dating will make the piece understandable for visitors to your collection.
Frequently asked questions about Ordovician crinoids
Are all crinoids from Erfoud Ordovician?
No. The known Scyphocrinites slabs from the region are dated to the late Silurian to early Devonian. For a different dating, information on the specific stratigraphic layer is required.
Can you tell the geological era from a photograph?
A photograph can aid in identification, but it does not replace proof of the geological strata in which it was found. Rock color and decorative arrangement do not allow for reliable age determination.
How do I request a suitable record?
Use the contact form and specify the size, budget, and desired origin. You will receive photos, dimensions, condition descriptions, and prices of available items within 1–3 business days.
